Rosie 2010-05-14

I love the books that Nalini Singh gives us. Without fail we get strong women, flowing dialogue, complicated plot twists and very good writing. ANGEL’s Blood delivers this and a whole lot more! This is a compelling trek into the world of the absolutely powerful and the lengths they will go to maintain that power. Five stars from me!

Angels’ Kiss is the first book in the Guildhunter’s series - a dark new world where lethal, beautiful archangels hold sway over immortals and mortals both, with the Guild Hunters caught in between, tasked with retrieving those vampires who break contracts with their angelic masters.

This series gives us Elena, a vampire hunter with natural born abilities to sense vampires and evil. Despite her talents, nothing has prepared her for being told by Archangel Raphael that this time she has to track a rogue angel. She may be the best, but as they say '...when archangels play, mortals break…'.

The angels are a different species. They can live for millenia, are the world's most powerful creatures and have the potential for corruption at a level to match that power.  They are beautiful beings with wings and eyes so vibrant that to look upon them is to feel at a deeply visceral level their terrible deadly beauty.

Whether they have fallen from heaven remains a mystery, but there is no question over the immediacy of the threat they pose to anyone who would stand in their way,  because, with their power and near immortality comes a disregard for the fleeting concerns of humans. They feel no compassion nor sense of connection with such lesser beings.

And it is one of the Angels that Elena has to hunt.

And it is at the side of Michael, one of the ten archangels, that she must stay until the rogue angel is caught, despite knowing that at the end of the hunt Michael will kill her for the forbidden knowledge she will have gained.

Michael is a terrifying being. He is able to use his mental powers to control Elena and only when they come close to killing each other do they learn the importance of trying to work together until the rogue is caught. They are surrounded by death, depravity and conflicting political factions.
They fight each other, they intrigue each other, they desire each other.

In this dangerous complicated world Elena and Michael and the diverse well drawn peripheral characters grab our focus and insist on total oncentration on what is happening.

For days after reading ANGEL'S Blood I found myself being pulled back into the story. Imagining new scenes, picturing wings, hearing their voices, reliving the pain. Really! This was one of those books that was NEW.

There's so much I could say about this book and what I am looking forward in future stories about Elena and Raphael, but Nalini Singh's take on vampires and angels is so innovative that all I can say is .... read it!
