Another adventure filled League novel from Sherrilyn Kenyon, and it’s another emotional rollercoaster of a ride! This one is all about the kids, so it’s not a stand alone, you really do need to have read Born of Night and Born of Fire to truly appreciate the story. All the kids from the characters in the first two books have grown up and are now like one big family of assassins, runners, smugglers and royalty. It’s just such a buzz to have that second generation story told, particularly when, of course, trouble brews and we get the odd guest appearance from the various mums and& dads. However, it did start off a bit slower, and was a little more confusing for the first few chapters. The plot build up with not quite as cleverly done as in the previous books, mainly because there were things that we weren’t supposed to discover until much later in the book, so it all made sense eventually, it just took a while. My biggest issue with this story was Alix. She, her mother and her sisters are all slaves. All owned by the man she calls her father. It just didn’t gel, we’ve got a society that accepts slavery and think it’s perfectly acceptable to get your slave pregnant, but yet there is still supposed to be a father type bond? All the actions attributed to this man, and some are quite horrid, are not the actions of someone that would be given the designation of father. Yes, abusive parents and horrible suffering throughout childhood have been a theme of these books, but in this instance we’re not talking about someone who views themselves as a father, but someone who views himself as an owner of chattel, so calling him a father doesn’t really mesh with the ownership of her that is being represented. Once we get into the story proper, it’s just another adrenaline packed, emotion fuelled, high speed ride, and again, another very intense book. My favourite aspect was the sudden appearance of people from previous book, or the connecting the dots with the current crew; it really was like a reunion special. Born of Ice just proves, once again, that Sherrilyn Kenyon owns stock in a tissue company! Darn, but that woman can write. She’ll drag every drop of emotion out of you, but she leaves her readers happily content at the end. This has been a wonderful series, and who knows, we might even get to see a few more books from the League one day. Here’s hoping. |
