| Fans of Gena Showalter’s adult books have long awaited the release of Intertwined, eager to see how she would translate her themes into a teen PNR. The premise was intriguing: Aden is possessed by four other souls each with a different power, including the dangerous ability to raise the dead. Sometimes all he longs for is to hear silence within his own head, yet when he meets MaryAnn she is able to dampen his voices. Why? What is it about Aden that has drawn these souls into him and how can he survive for much longer when so many people think that he is crazy. And what is it that makes Mary Ann so special? If the book could have kept a tight focus on these five ‘people’ then I think this could have been a great book. Interesting and fresh. Unfortunately the addition of bullies, the school dynamic, demons, vampires and werewolves meant that there were so many plot threads and characters that the entire book was weakened. It’s as if there was so much going on in Gena’s mind that she wanted to put it all down at once! If only this book could have been slowed down and made into about three books with time for each plot and the relevant characters to be developed! That said, there’s a natural style to Gena Showalter’s writing that carries the plot along and the ideas are interesting. It could have been so much better but it’s still a fun and enjoyable read. And besides – it’s clear that there will be further adventures with Aden et al so I’m sure that the richness of the plot in Intertwined will be of benefit in the coming books. |
