This is an amazing book, quite unlike Twilight and a total emotional rollercoaster (if you’re like me and prone to needing tissues when reading do NOT read this book on the train!). For those who remember the TV series “V” in the 80’s the theme of the book might seem vaguely reminiscent. Aliens have invaded earth and taken over the human species. But these are nice aliens. Pacifist aliens. Aliens that think humans are just a ‘little’ barbaric and violent. This is the story of one alien and the human host whose personality hasn’t faded into oblivion. Although more science-fiction styled, the Host still has strong romantic and emotional themes. Most definitely more an adult book than the Twilight series (no teenage angst to be found), and I think most adults will enjoy this far more than Twilight – with strong females, heroic men and so little whining! Of course, for those of us that grew up on sci-fi, it’s also a completely believable story! The duel personality aspect is very well written. It’s almost an insight into mental illness, or at least eye-opening to other possible perspectives of viewing the world. The story has quite a nice flow, and although has some very dramatic moments, and some very emotional moments, there isn’t anything that is truly unexpected. Yes, there are a few moments of “oh, didn’t quite see that” but that is more because you are emotionally tied to the story too much to think about the actual plot being set up. I can’t quite see why this book didn’t do better in either popularity or in sales, as it is really quite well written, as well as being a very good story. Maybe people just couldn’t get over the Twilight mania. So if you’ve finally discovered that the world does not start and stop at Twilight (which as you’re reading a Fangtastic Fiction review, I can only assume your world is suddenly much larger!), give this a go – just try to forget you ever heard about Twilight and you’ll enjoy it so much more. We need more star ratings! This is a 3.75! |
