Nick Gautier’s day just keeps getting better and better. Yeah, he survived the zombie attacks, only to wake up and find himself enslaved to a world of shapeshifters and demons out to claim his soul.

His new principal thinks he’s even more of a hoodlum than the last one, his coach is trying to recruit him to things he can’t even mention and the girl he’s not seeing, but is, has secrets that terrify him.

But more than that, he’s being groomed by the darkest of powers and if he doesn’t learn how to raise the dead by the end of the week, he will become one of them...

Invincible is book two in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s young adult series the “Chronicles of Nick”, leading an alternative reality to the destiny taken by Nick Gautier in her adult ‘Dark Hunter’ series.

As a fan of the adult series I’m finding the Chronicles of Nick an intriguing read, as it twists what we think we already know and fills in a few blanks at the same time.

However, it is a very light series, and Invincible is no exception. Invincible relied on the reader having read the first book, as someone who doesn’t retain in-depth memories of the books I’ve read previously, I found this just as difficult to follow as someone who’d never read the previous book. Interrupting the plot to add in a side note about previous adventures in an attempt to bring the reader up to speed just served to slow the plot down.

Nick is quite a delightful character in this, and his mum is still lovely, but one thing Ms Kenyon does well is build believable characters; whether they’re dark or light, they’re well crafted.

Unfortunately, what Ms Kenyon doesn’t do so well is have a conclusive plot, and although we’re only two books into the series it’s already starting to add layer upon layer, building up to twists in the plot.  We do have a basic story that is self contained in the book, but we’ve also got huge build up of the series arc happening, which makes me a little nervous about the length of the series.

Overall, it’s a light read, a few sexual references and chaste kisses, but nothing indepth, it’s enjoyable, but probably not a re-read.
