Radiant Shadows continues the wonderful Wicked Lovely series, so popular for taking all we know about fairies, and completely turning the world on its ear. So far each of the books in the series have been relatively stand alone, building on the previous books, but with a different court and couple as the main focus. Although this continues with the focus on Devlin of the High-Court and Ani of the Dark-Court, we’re now at the stage of series where if you haven’t read the previous books you’re going to find yourself confused a bit. I found Radiant Shadows paced quite slowly, it’s trying to set up for the grand finale and set actions in motion that will carry us through to a explosive finish; at the same time it’s trying to set all the characters up so they’re in the right places before the series ends, as well as trying to get Devlin and Ani together. Ms Marr really is trying to cram a lot into one book, yet it feels like it is ‘padded’ with excess information in many places. Although slow and potentially confusing, overall I enjoyed it. The characters are great, the level of emotional connection to ALL the characters continues to be high, and we do get a bit of the emotional roller coaster Ms Marr seems to take great delight in torturing her readers with. The ending is mostly complete, but the reader is definitely left with a sense of anticipation for the final book in the Wicked Lovely series. |
