Product Information

Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with an unbreakable bond to the earth's magic.  She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest and most dangerous vampires – the one who never die.

The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend, makes her a Dhampir.  Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making her one of them.

After two years of illicit freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir's Academy, hidden in the deep forests of Montana.  Rose will continue her Dhampir education.  Lissa will go back to being Queen of the elite Moroi social scene.  And both girls will resume breaking Academy hearts.

Fear made Lissa and Rose run away from St. Vladimir's – inside the Academy's iron gates, their world is even more fraught with danger.  Here, the cutthroat ranks of the Moroi perform unspeakable rituals, and their secretive nature and love of the night creates an enigmatic world full of social complexities.  Rose and Lissa must navigate through this dangerous world, confront the temptation of forbidden romance, and never once let their guard down, lest the Strigoi make Lissa one of them forever . . .

Ooooo, may I just start off with this is AMAZING, absolutely blood-tingling. Vampire Academy has all of the three characteristics I look for in a good book: Exciting characters (something I always like to point out), an impressive, mind-blowing plot and attitude!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it was exciting and thrilling, even at the restrictions of school life. I loved how you saw it from Rose's point of view. I know you get stories from a first-person point of view all the time, but not like this, it literally reached out and pulled you in. I felt as though I was in the book and was experiencing it how Rose, the main character, would experience whatever was happening; very well written.

I love a book with attitude; it makes the story fun and more worth reading. Sometimes I like a serious book that's intense and what not, but not always. The author of Vampire Academy, Richelle Mead, made sure that when she lacked in humour, she made up for with attitude. Sadly, she lost it more towards the end. It became more serious and that spark left. But it is what it is, right?

Rose, the main character, stood out to me mostly, she was what gave this book that spark. Although she could be a little self-absorbed with her looks sometimes, she was also an interesting character whose point of view never got boring. I loved how Richelle made all the characters worthwhile. Everyone was put in the story for a reason and everyone played a bit role. There was -

  1. Dimitri - The intense, cute, mentor.
  2. Lissa - The confused best friend.
  3. Christian - The misunderstood boy who's sickly in love.
  4. Mia - The girl who'd do anything to get in the "in" crowd.

They ALL played a big part in the story. Rose was the core, and they were the detail.

Vampire Academy, to me, flowed really well. I liked how it stayed with one character the whole time and didn't jump scenes. I loved being able to read it and not feel like I'm having a blonde moment, then have to go back and re-read it to see what I'd missed, which I sadly have to admit to doing In other books
I rambled on too much, but to sum up: Great characters, awesome plot, exceptionally written.

I thoroughly enjoyed so much about the Vampire Academy, not least the fact that it had a plot that was clever and a diverse set of characters. Thankfully Richelle Mead can also write well!

A really liked the pairing of the Moroi Princess with her guardian - taking the BFF motif just a little further than usual and the dynamic between two friends with different interests and demands on them.

This is a Young Adult book and I think it will be very popular, especially to any girls in senior boarding school. However I must admit at times I really wanted to smack the whole lot of then for being such a group of bitchy teenagers. I also thought that the editor should have cut out a lot of the snarky scenes and got on with the olot. C'mon, teenagers are NOT always the monsters they are shown as..... although maybe these are - and (being vampires) on so many levels!
