| Can I just say... “wow”. If you can get over the odd bit of ‘catholic guilt’ and ‘religious melodrama’, this is going to be J.R. Wards best series. We’ve got a range of men with Harleys, ‘shit-kickers’ and serious attitudes... who are loyal and witty and will take a bullet for you. Strong determined women. Great dialogue (if you’ve read any of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series you’ll be familiar with just how witty JR Wards characters can be), and a very original storytelling. So far I’ve only got my hands on Covet (thank you Hatchett Australia), which introduces a new story, but not a new world. We’re still in Cadwell, New York, and there is a beautiful move from one series to the other, with some of the elements from the Black Dagger Brotherhood making guest appearances (but not so obvious that you HAVE to have read the series to understand what’s going on, more sort of like an inside joke, if you will.) There are some wonderful twists and turns. Again, this seems to be very much part of JR Wards writing style, to throw in a couple of curve balls to keep you on your toes (which also makes it harder to review, as I’m desperately trying NOT to offer any spoilers, and yet trying to explain how wonderfully written this is!) We’ve got the introduction to the angels (presumably they were arch-angels), and then our hero gets thrown back to earth to save a soul (fallen angels... get it...). Through a series of crimes and misadventures we are introduced to the main characters of our story – and presumably the soul that is to be saved. In true JR Ward style you’re left guessing for quite some time as to which soul is the one in danger, and even in trying to work out how these people all fit into the story requires some patience. She really is the master of the push-pull story! First your sympathy goes to one character, then the other, then allegiances swap. Ooohhh... the drama, she really is very good! I will say that about halfway through this book I was going to put the series down as Crime, with the barest hint of paranormal (rather than paranormal romance), but rest assured.... there’s romance... and steam. If you fell in love with the angels of Nalini Singh – I’m afraid you’ll just have to get over it. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Dogma” you’ll be more in line with the angels (and if you haven’t, you really should, you’ll probably enjoy it). In “Fallen Angels” the fact that they’re Angels is all rather secondary to their mission on earth. Seven Sins, Seven souls to save, good versus evil, the earth is the prize, winner takes all, looser suffers a fiery hell (and by losers – that would be the human race). | ||
