The Cal Leandros series is just a great, gritty, well written series and Moonshine is no exception to that. Moonshine is the second book in the series and it manages to keep all the intensity of the first (Nightlife), have an original storyline and still keep the brothers as kick-arse, sarcastic and yet surprisingly appealing characters. I do, however, feel the need to dub Rob Thurman as an honorary Brit, the writing just has the very British black sense of humour. This is a book fuelled on sarcasm, humour and action, there’s a touch of gore and we almost get to see a sensitive side to the brothers... well... it’s implied at least. While devouring this book, I found the one paragraph that I think really gives a great and concise overview of the way the entire series is written:
This is from Cal. The half human, half monster, younger Leandros, but the whole book is littered with this style of black humour and great descriptions. This is a very action packed book, with the last few chapters just being a killer - I simply could not read fast enough! It took me a few chapters to get back into the world, but once settled it I was just clinging to the plot for dear life as I got thrown around plot twists and turns, there’s even the odd hair-pin turn to look out for. However, it’s not complete action, there are the odd moments where the guys are recovering from slipping through portals or being sliced and diced. There is also a little slow down near the middle, before we sprint into the final lap. Sadly, I just can’t tell you about the devastating ending chapters or you won’t get to suffer through it like I did – and where would the fun be in that? You’ll just have to trust me, it’s good. It’s very good. You may need to take heart medication before hitting this book. |
