The Devils Due is really all about getting the ‘gang’ back together. Many twists and turns to get there, but that’s basically how I’d sum it up. I am pleased to say that I finally ‘get’ Brian, oh, and he’s a WHOLE lot sexier in this book. Adam shows more of his ‘sensitive’ side, and we get to know more about the enigma that is Raphael. Again, this is a ‘set-up’ book to a large degree. The whole story really is aimed at getting from point a to point b (how to get everyone back on the same plane and the same place), but this is more an end of book revelation of “oh, that’s what this book was about” than the main theme. I do think that this is the only drawback with Jenna Black’s writing so far, she seems to have a vague map of what should happen and then fits the story around it, so in some ways the subplots can seem a little forced (of course, I could be completely wrong, if I ever get the opportunity to ask her I’ll let you know!). I love the relationship that is continuing to develop between Lugh, Morgan & Adam (pick MY favourite characters), but I just can’t see what’s going to happen with Andrew. He keeps getting move to the forefront of the story, then shoved to the back. There is something going on, but I guess I’m just going to have to wait and see what happens. There is a lot of that in this book. Lots of hints dropped that this may not be what you think it is, it’s great! I do love a good twisty story, but I think the suspense aspect could have been a bit more intense. Jenna Black knows how to write a wonderfully entertaining story. Despite some of the blacker, darker elements of this story I would still class it as a pretty light and easy read. Some twists, but not enough to really get the hard pounding with anticipation. Having done a slight Jenna Black marathon in order to play catch up, I am dying to get my teeth into the next in the series, ‘Speak of the Devil’, but in the interests of not becoming jaded I’ll give myself a couple of books in-between, but it is a hard thing I do! The things we go through to make sure you get to read an accurate review, unjaded and un-biased! If you haven’t read anything in the Morgan Kingsley series by Jenna Black, I highly recommend you start... Book 5 “The Devil's Playground” is coming out in May 2010, and you are not going to want to miss getting into it as soon as it arrives |
