Jenna Black is an incredibly good author, and the second book in the Morgan Kingsley series just proves that I’m right! Not as dynamically mind blowing as the first – but it is incredibly hard to live up to that one. This is still a really enjoyable read. Exorcist Morgan Kingsley is just as hot as ever and even more delightfully sarcastic that before (yes, hard to believe but its true!). Of course we also now have the added dimension of the lusty Lugh. We get to know Adam and Dom better as well, and oh boy, they almost made me blush a couple of times, let alone poor Morgan! The Devil you know is a little darker in places with a few really nasty twists, but the overall feel is much the same as the first. The characters are developing, in both themselves and in their relationships with each other. Except for Brian. I just don’t get Brian. I’m sure he’s a lovely guy, but as a relatively dysfunctional women myself, I just can’t see how she’s still with him... maybe the sex is really that great? I think we’re supposed to feel for Brian, but I just can’t. Not yet anyway. This is another one of those stories were I am trying to be so very careful not to share my favourite bits for fear of spoiling the surprises that are woven throughout. But let me just say, I like Andrew, I like Adam, Dom is very cool and Morgan’s parents are just what you’d expect – trust me, you’ll read the Devil you know and go “ooohh, yeah, I get what Ali meant!”. In some ways the story with Der Jager is a bit of a let down. Yes, it’s all dark and has a few unexpected (and unpleasant) twists, but he just never gets to quite the level of evilness that he should. I think Raphael did evil better in the first book. The odd teary moment, overall a little dark with a few intense patches and now I feel like I’m giving a weather report... what would ‘don’t forget your sunscreen, you’re going to need it’ mean I wonder! However, this is definitely a book two in a series. We get the ideas touched briefly in the first book expanded and we’re being set up for the rest of the series. At least Jenna ties her endings off nicely. No loose threads, but still has promises of things yet to come. |
