ALI’S THOUGHTS

Dearly departed takes a familiar zombie theme and completely turns it on its ear.

This is the debut novel from Lia Habel, and although the first chapter does not set the scene well, with bloated prose and no set up, from then on in its nonstop page turning as were taken on an emotional action packed ride.

The world building is very clever; set in a future America, where the population has chosen to revert to a Victorian period England. Anyone who has ever read a historical romance can understand how ideal that world seems, how romantic, how civilized, how refined. Of course anyone who’s put more than a passing thought to the fantasy quickly discovers the downside to that world. And this is the world we are in, with strict class structure, no woman’s rights, employment and schooling based on who you parents are, and all the fakery that is required to stay in ones class.

Living trapped in this world is Miss Dearly. She’s in the right class, so even as an orphan she’s going to the right school. But she isn’t a particularly good little lady; she is fascinated by the most appalling news footage and is just a little too good at shooting. She’s a rather spunky heroine who doesn’t put up with too much crap and adapts quickly with aplomb.

Hidden from this world is the zombie apocalypse that is quietly happening, and it’s being kept hidden by the military. But the really strange thing about this zombie apocalypse? Some of the dead are “normal”.

One of these would be the handsome, for a dead guy, Bram.

The whole story is in first person, but to add yet another twist, we hear several different voices. In some ways this was great as it meant we knew what was going on without any convoluted dialogue, and even with all the POVs we still managed to get a bit of misdirection thrown in to keep the reader on their toes. However it did feel like there were too many main characters, even though there were really only two, the POV writing style allowed the secondary characters to develop more than they really needed to in the first book.

Overall, this is a great fun read, very light, but clever and original. Well worth a look at if you like zombies, light action, or have a secret fantasy about living in a regency romance.

ALI’S THOUGHTS

This is a great Christmas themed anthology with a thread of steampunk tying the stories together. Each are very different romances, but all very well written with intelligent, believable characters and clever plots.

CRIME WAVE IN A CORSET

Stacey Shoeman

A very clever and talented thief, Cornelia Peabody, steals a Fabergé egg. Six months later the original custodian, professor, and part-time inventor, Roderick Coddington, tracks her down. Managing to shekel a deadly wristwatch to her, Roderick gives Cornelia seven days to steal the egg back…or like his sister, the original owner of the egg, she won’t get to see Christmas morning.

Lots of twists and the clever use of steam-punk technology made this a really delightful fast paced read. The relationship development between the pair seemed natural, while the interaction and dialogue flowed naturally.

The main let down was the rather “dickens” like guilt trip. Poor hardened thief, with battered childhood, forced into a life of crime, but really has a heart of gold and once good strong man has shown her the error of her ways she wants to repent. Always annoys me having strong independent woman suddenly realise that what they’ve been missing is an honest man to guide them.

But if you can overlook this mild annoyance, and Ms Shoeman doesn’t go overboard with it, this is a great light romance with airships and things that go boom.

THIS WINTER HEART

PG Forte

Ophelia Leonide is forced to turn to her estranged husband after the death of her father has left her homeless and penniless. Two problems; Dario Leonide threw her out eight years ago  after he thought she’d betrayed him, demanding she never return if she wanted him to protect her secret…and now she has another secret, their seven year old son.

This is a wonderful exploration of the effects of technology and how it can affect love.

Although I didn’t like the child, Arthur, he came across as a little too fake, all the other characters were believable and developing an emotional attachment was easy.

It’s a warming story, with emotional highs and lows that tug the heart strings throw a cleverly written plot that brings the story to life.

WANTED: ONE SCOUNDREL

Jenny Schwartz

An Australian suffragette and heiress, Esme Smith, needs the help of a male to represent her party in the mens-only clubs where all political moving and shaking is now happening.

Stepping fresh off the boat  from America, and straight into the beautiful Esme’s schemes, is the very handsome and charming Jed Reeves. A man that charming has got to be a bounder, a cad and a scoundrel…just the perfect man to go into politics really.

This is mostly a witty and fun romance, with great characters who’re immensely likably, and a fun plot full of adventure twists and mystery.

However, knowing that this is a Christmas themed anthology caused a bit of confusion initially, as everyone sat around blazing fires to warm up…in Western Australia, where Christmas temperatures in the 40c are not unheard of, was very off putting. Until we were enlighten to the Mid-Winter Christmas theme.

I liked this story, the characters were great, and I always enjoy stories with strong independent woman, particularly when they’re surrounded by strong independent men who are encouraging. Although I did find Esme’s social conscience preaching a little annoying at times, it did fit with the character.

This is just a great warm fuzzy romance, not particularly steamy, but darn nice and a delight to read.

FAR FROM BROKEN

JK Col

This is the darkest of the four stories, yet manages to cram so much plot and excitement into its pages.

Callie Carlise, prima ballerina and wife to Colonel Jasper Carlise, is kidnapped, tortured and left for dead, to be found by her adoring husband. Jasper will do anything to save his wife, even allow her to become a test recipient of new technology, turning her into half woman, half machine.

This is an incredibly well written story showing the struggle Callie has in accepting her new limbs, and that her husband Jasper still loves her. But it’s donbe without the gnashing of teeth and wailing that you’d find in many contemporary romances, the first thing Callie does to show Jasper that she’s annoyed with him for allowing this is use her new mechanical fist to punch him in the chest.

As well as the clever dialogue and well paced story of two people trying to reconnect, we’ve got an adventure murder mystery to solve, which adds a great new layer to the story, it’s not a huge twist, but it is well played.

All the stories fit well with each other, with enough in common to allow all them to appeal to many readers, but with enough differences to allow different readers to have firm favourites.

Many novellas don’t manage to allow the reader to connect to the characters, or suffer from a lack in depth in either world building or plot development. A Clockwork Christmas has four stories that do NOT suffer from these problems and can happily be held as examples of how a good novella is written.

Touch Of Power By Author Maria V. SnyderBook Title: Touch Of Power
# 1

Author: Maria V. Snyder

Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan assumes their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honoured for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Territories, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.

Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader — an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own — is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince, the leader of a campaign against her people.

As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for.

Ali’s Thoughts

Touch of Power is the first novel in a spectacular new series from one of my favourite authors, Maria v Synder.

Set in a world full of magic, post a plague that whipped out millions, a plague that the general population has been lead to believe was unleashed on them by the healers. Avery is the last living healer, and in a world were factions are fighting to rule what’s left of the world, it seems that she’s rather hot property. Some want her dead. Some want her alive.

She’s stubborn, strong, but her weakness is children, she can’t walk past a child in need without helping, and it’s going to get her into trouble one day, even grateful mothers will hand her in for the reward.

Enter Kerrick. He wants her alive, but only so she can die healing the man he hopes will save the world. He’s also a bully, authoritarian, used to being obeyed, and completely out if his depth in dealing with Avery. Even if he does has a secret of his own.

Touch of Power had it all; magic, a quest, worlds torn apart, loyal friends, confusing enemies, twists, and kisses.

It’s a very addictive book, and an incredibly comfortable and enjoyable read. It’s well paced, taking the time to allow the reader to develop emotional ties to the characters, without trying to force the issue.

In some ways it feels almost formulaic, but this stems more from the sense of familiarity than any true formulaic writing. Anyone who’s read or watched a fantasy will feel like they’re curling up with a old friend when reading this.

Maria v Synder creates characters that come alive and plots that form movies in your mind. The hardest part of reading this book is trying to find intermission.

Deadly Pursuit By Author Nina CroftBook Title: Deadly Pursuit

Blood Hunter # 2

Author: Nina Croft

Breaking assassin Jonathon Decker out of a maximum security prison on Trakis One seemed like a good idea at the time. Now, pursued across space by the two most powerful factions in the universe, the crew of El Cazador are having second thoughts. They’d like to give him back. Unfortunately, that no longer seems an option.

Jon is used to working alone. Now, he’s stuck on the space cruiser El Cazador until he can work out just what he’s supposed to know that puts him on everybody’s most-wanted-dead list. He’s not happy that the crew includes a runaway priestess with designs on his virtue—such as it is. Jon likes women, but he gave up the role of protector a long time ago, and Alexia, High Priestess of the Church of Everlasting Life, is an accident waiting to happen.

After twenty-four excruciatingly boring years of doing her duty, Alex is finally having some fun. She never meant to run away—it was a rash impulse—and she means to go back—eventually. But first, she’s going to squeeze enough excitement out of the situation to last her a lifetime. And what could be more exciting than a stunningly gorgeous werewolf?

Meanwhile, the Church are chasing their missing priestess, and the Collective are pursuing their escaped assassin. Being hunted has never been more deadly…or more fun.

ALI’S THOUGHTS

I thoroughly enjoyed Nina Crofts first novella, Break Out, which was the introduction to this series. After reading Break Out I was looking forward to seeing how her writing talent developed, but wasn’t sure if a full length novel in this series was going to be in the cards, so I was delighted to have the chance to read the second in the series, over the moon to discover that Deadly Pursuit is a full length novel, and ecstatic to realized that Ms Coft REALLY can write.

Given a full novel to explore characters and plots Nina has used every page to its best advantage.

A mix between a paranormal and a sci-fi romance, with a healthy dose of good old fashioned adventure thrown in, Deadly Pursuit carries on from Break Out, in fact in starts a few hours after the ending, and although it could be read as a stand-alone, I think most readers would enjoy Deadly Pursuit so much more if they take the time to read the light novella first.

We’re on board the spaceship El Cazador, owned by the vampire Rico, a vampire originally from earth before earth was evacuated. Rico has recently become involved with Skylar, formally of the collective (think human Borg), immortals because of a highly expensive treatment the collective is one of the big players in intergalactic politics, and they’re heavily armed (the other big player being the church, who provide immortality and everlasting life in heaven).

We have Tannis. Kick arse captain who wants to earn enough cash to take the treatment herself, Janny; she puts the bomb in bombshell, security expert and gorgeous babe. Al, stowaway come cabin boy. Daisy, co-pilot genetic hybrid, part human, part plant. And Jon, the assassin they’ve just rescued from maximum security prison, where he was facing execution by radiation poisoning in the mines.

[spoiler alert]

So it turns out that Al is really Alexia, runaway high-priestess of the church of everlasting life.  And she wants to experience a bit of life before she goes back to take up her priestess duties; and the hunky Jon is one of these experiences she’d quite like to try.

Alex is really the only downfall of this story, she just annoyed me. She was written well, but as a character she was whiny, sulky and annoying. She spent her life being protected and sheltered so it’s not too unsurprising she constantly finds herself in stupid and dangerous situations. In fact, I’m not the only one who found this annoying, the crew commented about if too.

This is a light easy to read story that is well paced with believable (if not always likable) characters. It has an ongoing story arc, but each book is, so far ok to read as a standalone, and the story arc is written in such a way as to give us one conclusion that then leads on to the next section, so there’s less fear if this turning into the series that never ends.

It’s fresh and original, but with enough familiar elements to make if a comfortable read.

Nina just made it to my must read list.
