April 2010

Welcome!

Finding a good book to read can be a matter of searching for the next release from a known and loved author, browsing bookshelves (virtual or real) or checking out book recommendations and reviews. But, what suits one person may not suit another.

Take us at Fang for example. Obviously we love paranormal romance and urban fantasy with a good dose of science fiction, fantasy and suspense thrown in. And any well written book (think engaging characterisation, solid plot structure, a balance of action and reflection, logical and clever construction, emotional as well as imaginative overtones) will get our thumbs up. But within that context there are definite preferences that often cause us to have a good laugh at ourselves!

For example, if you're looking at Paranormal Romance, Shifters or Historicals then Rosie is bound to be right there with you. And if your preference is more for Magecraft, Faerie, Urban Fantasy and Young Adult, then Ali will be leading the charge.

In fact, we find that having differences in our approach really helps us to understand a lot of our customers and their differences too! So any time you want suggestions on books, please let us know past books you’ve enjoyed and your general preferences …. between us we’re sure to be able to send you some ideas that will suit!

We're also looking ahead to May .... we thought, hey this is the fifth month, and the following new releases just so happen to be book five in each of their series!

So welcome to 5in5!!! Check out these coming releases.

Rosie and Ali @FANG

Competition - Your choice of a Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy!!!

For a chance to win our competition this month all you need to do is tell us the top three things you look for in a bookshop.

Either email us at info@fangtasticfiction.com or tweet us @fangbooks with your suggestions. The competition closes on 30 April and is open only for Australia and New Zealand.

And as different people like different styles of books, this month we're giving a choice in the prize for our competition - our winner can choose to win either a copy of Lora Leigh's Bengal's Heart OR Eileen Wilks' Mortal Sins! Frankly I love both of these books, but yes, they are quite different.

Bengal's Heart is Lora Leigh's 19th Breeds novel. If you've read any of her books you'll know to expect intrigue and suspense plus a big dollop of passionate sex! Reporter Cassa Hawkins has always supported Breed rights - especially in light of a specimen like Cabal St. Laurents, the epitome of the male animal. But when the Breeds are incriminated in a series of violent murders, it's left to Cassa and Cabal to discover the truth before they become prey.

Mortal Sins is a tight Urban Fantasy - think FBI thriller with magic, werewolves and supernatural creatures! This is book 5 of Eileen Wilk's excellent Moon Children series.

FBI agent Lily Yu is in North Carolina with her lover and mate Rule Turner, lu nuncio of the Nokolai werewolf clan, where he is to take custody of his son from the boy’s grandmother. It’s a purely personal trip until Rule, in wolf form, finds three bodies in a shallow grave. But murder, however bizarre, is an everyday affair for Lily, who was a homicide cop before being recruited into the FBI’s Magical Crimes Division. A more personal shock arrives in the person of Rule’s son’s mother. Why is she challenging Rule’s long standing plan to bring his son to live among the Nokolai?

So... just tell us what you look for in a bookshop, name your preferred prize and you'll be in the running to win!

WIN!!

Check out what we think at our Book Reviews Page!

Since our last newsletter we've added 29 new reviews to fangbooks!!! Our eyes are falling our of our (collective) heads, but in the past month we've indulged in some excellent books, and persevered thorough some we'd rather have given up on.

Yep, we'd like to give you our thoughts on books we read so that you'll get a good insight into a range of recent releases and some tips on books you might like! Some books simply shine more than others. If you look at the new reviews for books that earned either a four or a five star rating you should be able to find ideas of what to read, no matter what your preference of book:

Paranormal Romance: Archangel's Kiss, The Road to Hell, Red Kiss, Charming the Devil

Urban Fantasy: Mortal Sins, Blood Lines, Finding the Lost, Moonshine, The Better Part of Darkness

Romantic Fantasy: Shalador's Lady, Born of Fire

Young Adult: Storm Born, Magic Study, Fire Study, Demon Princess, Marked (PC and Kristen Cast), Fallen, Nearly Departed

And our top picks of the above?

Archangel's Kiss - The way that Nalini Singh balances character development, romance, politics and a solid suspenseful plot is completely remarkable.

Charming the Devil– Delightfully charming, blending two styles (paranormal romance & historical romance) together seamlessly

Moonshine (Cal Leandros #2)– Original, gritty and very well written

Nearly Departed - So cleverly written, it takes you to the border of terror, dangles you over the high walls and brings you back down to earth, white knuckled and breathing heavily.
