December 2009
Welcome! |
||
And so 2009 draws to a close! For us it's been a fangtastic year because this was when we decided that one of our greatest loves is the books that we read ... just as one of our greatest hates is not being able to get the books we want. And so this year was the birth of Fangtastic Fiction! We've learned about setting up accounts with Distributors, liaising with publishers, getting to know authors, designing the site .... and beyond that we've been able to firm up our thought of what makes for a good book to read and share that with you. For all of you who have been with us from the start - thank you for your support and feedback. We've been blown away by how supportive so many authors and publishers have been and in return we're doing our best to read and review as many titles as we can (it's a tough job etc etc *grin*) Looking ahead to 2010, we've got a number of specials to offer, giveaway competitions, author interviews, book signings and more and more reviews and recommendations. So, roll on December and get ready for a New Year full of books to sink your teeth into! |

Competions and Freebies |
||
We decided that we would really like to run a monthly give-a-way competion - but we can't think of what you'd need to do in order to win a prize. So this months competion: Best suggestion for a competition will win one copy of the sensation new release Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. Of course, christmas is coming up, so what the heck, until the end of the year (yes, until December 31st 2009) ALL orders placed will get a free 'mystery' book. Some of these may be new releases, some may be old favourites, and some may even be unavailable in Australia, it's all pot-luck! |

Highlights of Recent Releases - the ones we've read and can highly recommend |
|
Ahhhh Nalini Singh, that Goddess of all things Psy-Changeling has done it again with her new release of Blaze of Memory. If you haven't explored this series you really don't know what you're missing out on. We're talking about tight plots, well created characters, intelligent writing, a fascinating world and a mix of action and passion to suit any lover of toothsome heroes and heroines. Within this context, Blaze of Memory is probably the most cerebral book of the series. Considering that this book is that of Dev, one of the Forgotten, and Katya, a Psy, then it's appropriate that we're dealing with conspiracies, plots, thoughts and emotions rather than a great deal of physical action. Beware though - the ending is one of the most emotional I've read in a long time - a beautiful heart wrenching conclusion!

One of the great delights recently has been discovering Tracey O'Hara. Her debut novel Night's Cold Kiss was released in September and I highly recommend it! This is a book that drags you into a dark and dangerous world with it’s intrigue, edgy politics, diverse characters and a plot that delivers good surprises. As a further surprise, this has just been announced as a finalist in the Australian Aurealis Awards for Best Horror Novel! The Awards will be announced in Brisbane on 23 January 2010 and we can't wait. Check out our review of Night's Cold Kiss here.......

Alas, alack and lots of woe! With Tall, Dark and Fangsome the Immortality Bites series has come to an end! over the five books we have followed along with reluctant vampire Sarah Dearly as she has tried to comes to terms with her new existence, fallen in love with the local vampire master, Theirry, gotten to know Theirry's wife (well they've been separated for 400 years!), become best friends with a vampire slayer (oops sorry, now a conflicted vampire) and generally faced murder, mayhem and mischief in her own indomitable way. Ah Michelle Rowen how we love you! And frankly, how we hate you for drawing the curtain on this series! Just as well you've been busy writing Demon Princess (out early 2010) and are starting on a gritty UF series. |

Spotlight on Favourite Authors Sunny |
|
Sunny is an amazing author and if you haven't yet entered her world of the Moniere, then you're missing out on a very special treat. Mona Lisa is a half human half Moniere, with the ability to draw down the energy of the moon and share it amongst others. This makes her a Queen, but doesn't ensure her safety from the politics of other Queens, the Guardians or the demons from NetherHell. Her next series, following the demon Lucinda, is just as exciting and very sexy (and we're happy to get these in from the USA for you). |

I was delighted to meet Sunny recently and she is a warm, bright and very funny person! As for how this story came about....? Sunny is a doctor in Canada and she was on a long drive with her husband with her little boy in the back. She and her husband started playing around with ideas and the concept of the Moniere was created. Even though she hadn't written before she sat down and the story grew from there. have a look at Mona Lisa Darkening and Mona Lisa Craving and let us know what you think! |

Keri Arthur |
|
Keri Arthur is a Melbourne, Australia writer who writes urban paranormal books with tough capable women taking on the world. Keri is an amazingly talented writer and has written a diverse range of books which, while dealing with worlds of vampires, werewolves, magic, military conspiracies, psychics (okay, you get my drift!) all have in common excellent writing, intriguing plots and characters who will blow you away. She also writes quite lusty main characters! Think James Bond with a bra - just as tough, just as sexy, although they really can't be bothered with the suave and charming bit!. Her Riley Jensen is one of the genre's leading characters. She's tough, she's highly sexed (particularly when the moon is full), but she is also conflicted about who she is and how others see her. Riley Jensen has an emotional depth that makes a reader connect to her through the thriller ride she's on. It's easy to see why her books have received so many nominations and prizes including a nomination in the Best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice Awards, received a ‘perfect 10’ from Romance Reviews Today, as well as being nominated for Best Shapeshifter in PNR’s PEARL Awards. For our profile of Keri have a look at her Author Page where you can also follow through to her books under these series: Riley Jensen Guardian Series.The Ripple Creek Werewolves Series.The Spook Squad Series.The Damask Circle Series.Destiny Kills.Nikki and Michael Series |

Head on over to http://allthingsurbanfantasy.blogspot.com/ where Abigail is running the first ever Urban Fantasy Cover Art awards. There are some great prizes, and although 'International' voters (that would be anyone outside USA or UK) can only win the grand prize) it is still worth voting! http://allthingsurbanfantasy.blogspot.com Nominees include: |
| Hush, Hush will have a sequel |
| I loved Becca Fitzpatricks Hush, Hush - but I am a little wary about having a sequel. Hush, Hush ended so well, I just can't see how she's going to come up with a sequel that won't be contrived. I guess we're all going to have to wait until "Crescendo" is released late 2010 to see how she does it - I am certainly intrigued and looking forward to this one. |
