March 2010

Welcome!

Normally we'd give you a round up of the Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy books coming out in March, but the P.E.A.R.L (Paranormal Excellence Award for Romantic Literature) award nominees have only just been announced, so we thought we'd take the opportunity to not only congratulate all the wonderful authors that we adore for being nominated, but also give you a chance to get to know some new authors.

Some of these have only been released in USA previously, so we have made a special effort to make sure we can get them in, and as many of them are also several books into the series, we are bringing in all the earlier books too (there is nothing like starting a series halfway through!)

To make things easier for you we've started a whole new category! You'll now find all award winners and nominees under (...wait for it..) 'Award Winners' in the shop, as the awards are announced throughout the year we'll add new subcategories so you can always find award winning books to read.

Although, if you just want a quick overview of what's out this month, you can also visit the website - under the link for the bookstore you'll find the "Newly Bitten" page, which is where we give a neat outline of all the paranormal romance, urban fantasy and teen paranormal books being released in the current month, and if you want to get the jump on your reading, you'll also see the subtly named "Next Month's Books" so you can always easily find out what's coming up next!

But as a quick guide to highlights:

We're going to skip our normal review highlights this month, but if you've been following our blog you'll know that February was all about discovering the great urban fantasy series by Ilona Andrews, the sensational Angelology by Danielle Trussoni, which has been absolutely rocking the world of both publishing and film, and the new style of fantasy tentatively called "Maori Goth" that starts with the debut book The Bone Tiki by David Hair.

March is turning out to be a wonderful month for new books. Highlight's are:

  • Archangel's Kiss by Nalini Singh which is remarkable in every way.
  • Aylssa Day's Atlantis books: I've just finished a marathon of all of these but even if you haven't read the prior books her Atlantis Redeemed is still great
  • Hunting Julian by Jacquelyn Frank will draw you into a parallel world and get your heart pounding,
  • Joss Ware (aka Collean Gleason writing UF) has the brilliant Abandon the Night out,
  • Shiloh Walker has the next installment of her Hunter series (gritty, sexy, well written UF) in Hunter's Need
  • Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole to find out what is happening with the scottish werewolf when he sets his sights on the Archer Lucia!
  • Oh and I have to say that Crux by Moira Rogers is a wonderful read.

And a warning - April is going to be a BIG Urban Fantasy month: we've got the release of Patricia Briggs: Silver Borne as well as Seanan McGuire: A Local Habitation, and a debut Teen Paranormal Guardian of the Dead from our very own Karen Healey (she's a Kiwi living in Aussie, so who gets her?!).

But for the moment, all of our attention is on the PEARLS!

I've been reading Alison Brennan's romantic thrillers for years now. This is an author who always deals in tough topics, heartpounding tension and the search for justice. She's turned her attention to the paranormal with her new series - the 7 Deadly Sins. This is an intriguing new series and we think that Original Sin may even make it a contender for the 2010 P.E.A.R.Ls.

We're putting our money where our mouth is on this one...
purchase any 2009 PEARL nominee from our new "Award Winners" category and we'll GIVE you a copy of Original Sin!

Original Sin is a tough and intricate mystery where the level of threat builds relentlessly throughout the book. It's fascinating and complex and well written. But a word of warning... understanding a little about the lead-up to this plot will help you appreciate the characters and events much more.

In 2007 Alison Brennan wrote a short story prequel, 'Deliver Us From Evil' in an anthology called 'What you Can't See.' In this, Demonologist Anthony Zaccardi can't save the twelve priests brutally slaughtered at a California mission, but he's determined to send the killer -- an ancient demon -- back to hell. And when tough, sexy local sheriff Skye McPherson refuses to believe something supernatural is at work, Anthony realizes that to "Deliver Us From Evil" he must first win Skye's trust, then her heart.

Original Sin is based some months later in the same town but the ruins of the mission are now being used by a coven of witches to raise demons who embody the seven deadly sins.....
