ALI’S THOUGHTS

Dearly departed takes a familiar zombie theme and completely turns it on its ear.

This is the debut novel from Lia Habel, and although the first chapter does not set the scene well, with bloated prose and no set up, from then on in its nonstop page turning as were taken on an emotional action packed ride.

The world building is very clever; set in a future America, where the population has chosen to revert to a Victorian period England. Anyone who has ever read a historical romance can understand how ideal that world seems, how romantic, how civilized, how refined. Of course anyone who’s put more than a passing thought to the fantasy quickly discovers the downside to that world. And this is the world we are in, with strict class structure, no woman’s rights, employment and schooling based on who you parents are, and all the fakery that is required to stay in ones class.

Living trapped in this world is Miss Dearly. She’s in the right class, so even as an orphan she’s going to the right school. But she isn’t a particularly good little lady; she is fascinated by the most appalling news footage and is just a little too good at shooting. She’s a rather spunky heroine who doesn’t put up with too much crap and adapts quickly with aplomb.

Hidden from this world is the zombie apocalypse that is quietly happening, and it’s being kept hidden by the military. But the really strange thing about this zombie apocalypse? Some of the dead are “normal”.

One of these would be the handsome, for a dead guy, Bram.

The whole story is in first person, but to add yet another twist, we hear several different voices. In some ways this was great as it meant we knew what was going on without any convoluted dialogue, and even with all the POVs we still managed to get a bit of misdirection thrown in to keep the reader on their toes. However it did feel like there were too many main characters, even though there were really only two, the POV writing style allowed the secondary characters to develop more than they really needed to in the first book.

Overall, this is a great fun read, very light, but clever and original. Well worth a look at if you like zombies, light action, or have a secret fantasy about living in a regency romance.

ALI’S THOUGHTS

Werewolves on the Titanic…it’s hard to think of a more interesting way to rehash an old romantic story, and Claudia Gray has certainly come to the party with this one.

Fateful is a classic boy meets girl story, and for those that loved the movie The Titanic (DiCaprio and Winslet) this will bring back all sorts of pleasant flashbacks. The comparisons to the movie are unavoidable. It’s a romance, between classes, on a boat that we all know sinks. This gives us few options to play with really, either one dies, they both die or they both survive, but we know for a fact that one of these three options HAS to occur. In most books the survival of the characters isn’t really an issue.

So we have Tess, a young maid to a stereotypically horrible family, which has money problems they’re trying to hide while finding a suitable marriage for the daughter. And we have Alec, handsome only son of an American steel magnate; and werewolf under the control of a rather nasty secret society of werewolves set on taking over the world.

The story itself flows well, with interesting twists and good pacing, but knowing that we’re leading up to the sinking makes it predictable, as the reader tries to work out the timing and place events in order to fit to the inevitable.

The characters are quite believable, but the werewolf aspect does provide a great new dimension to otherwise expected character development.

Basically, Fateful is a nice light read; it’s nothing overly original, but it does tell a story well, and is a great first book in what, I’m assuming, will become a rather interesting series.

KAYLEE’S OPINION

Nightshade is a reasonably good book, one I would recommend to people who enjoy books on werewolves. I liked this book, but I’m not one to rave over the common wolves and vampires of today’s world. I prefer the werewolves that change during full moon and terrorise towns, not practically normal people that can turn into almost tame dogs.

The characters were easy to understand and were nice to read about, even though I thought the main character, Calla, made a foolish decision in the end (I won’t tell you what it is, you’ll have to read about it and find out).

I didn’t really like the other main character, Shay; he was a nuisance in and, even though he plays a very important part in Nightshade, I would probably have liked it better without him.

The flow was good and it was very easy to follow. I give the author props for that considering it’s very hard to find a book these days that have an easy flow. She also managed to keep me interested throughout the story, if only barely.

The story-line is just a repeat of a lot of stories I have read, but it still had a unique quality I couldn’t quite put my finger on. It was something I enjoyed, though, I can tell you that.

The ending was a satisfying cliff-hanger, it didn’t leave me begging for more, but it left me with enough juice to bump Nightshade up a star, but if there is a sequel, I don’t want to read it unless I have to.
Nightshade would appeal to people who love shapeshifter romances, I didn’t like it, but I do think it would appeal to other people, just not me.

Review: Die For Me by Amy Plum

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Book Title: Die For Me

Author: Amy Plum

An enthralling and unique paranormal romance, Die for Me introduces a new version of the undead with revenants, beings who are fated to sacrifice themselves over and over again to save others’ lives.

My life had always been blissfully, wonderfully normal. But it only took one moment to change everything.

Suddenly, my sister, Georgia and I were orphans. We put our lives into storage and moved to Paris to live with my grandparents. And I knew my shattered heart, my shattered life, would never feel normal again. Then I met Vincent.

Mysterious, sexy and unnervingly charming, Vincent Delacroix appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my feet. Just like that, I was in danger of losing my heart all over again. But I was ready to let it happen.

Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Because Vincent is no normal human. He has a terrifying destiny, one that puts his life at risk every day. He also has enemies. . .immortal, murderous enemies who are determined to destroy him and all of his kind.

KAYLEE’S REVIEW

Talk about a new twist to the undead. Amy Plum’s done a good job of sticking out from the crowd. Maybe not a lot, but she’s done it all the same. Die For Me has good characters, neat story line and It flowed really well. Not very busy in the action department, but I still liked the book.

The characters aren’t something I’ve read in a story before. Revenants are the undead who are able to die whenever they want to, but more for a purpose rather than just randomly dropping dead when you feel like it. I don’t know if the characters were just a nicer version of zombies or not, but points for creativeness.

There is one thing that really bothers me about this book and that is that it’s a cliché. I’m getting a bit bored of the whole ‘perfect boyfriend’, ‘special girl’ aspect. I’ve noticed that everyone’s been taking it a bit too over the top lately and it’s worn off it’s novelty. It’s getting too predictable; I’ve read it all before.

Die For Me has a lovely ending, with a cute little love scene for the finish and an epic showdown between good and evil. Very close to the end you get the hands-on showdown where everyone gears up in their black, ninja-ish gettups and get ready to fight. That made me so giddy because usually that means some intense stuff’s about to go down and it did. It’d been nicer if it lasted longer, but it’s something I can live without.

Die For Me has some really neat moments that are beautifully put and they just make your stomach turn to jelly. One of my favourite moments/quotes from the book was: ‘He had recaptured the noble air he wore the day I saw him sparring with Vincent. The twitchy, stuttering poet had transformed into the formidable fighter’. MAN I loved that part!

Great book, interesting ending and creative characters. Well done. I’d more recommend this book to girls 12-16. It’s not something I see any adults reading. Too… Young and filled with mooshy teenage love.

Interview with Jessica Shirvington

Jessica Shirvington

Jessica Shirvington hit our radar in 2010 with the release of her YA debut, Embrace.  It was immediately clear that this was a series to follow and an author to watch! With book 2 released in April 2011 we decided to ask Jess a little about what this writer’s journey has been like for her.

Hi Jessica, thanks for taking the time to visit with us at Fangbooks!  It’s release time for your second book, Enticed, so we really wanted to talk to you!

Thanks!

For those who haven’t met Violet Eden yet, what can they expect from your books Embraced and Enticed?

EMBRACE is an introduction to Violet Eden who is having her 17th birthday and about to discover that she is not only human. She carries the essence of an angel within and her birthday marks the point of its awakening. Now, Violet must learn about the world of angels both light and dark and decide if she is willing to ‘Embrace’ the gifts and responsibilities that she will receive by completing her Angelic Trials or is she is going to turn her back on her destiny. It is not a simple choice for Violet. Her upbringing has been unconventional. Her mother dies giving birth to her and her father has never fully recovered from her loss.

Embrace by Jessica ShirvingtonAlong with her discovery she also finds out that Lincoln, he long time crush, has been lying to her since the day they met two years ago, secretly training her for a future as a Grigori warrior. So when Violet meets exiled angel, Phoenix, she discovers that comfort and friendship can be found in the most unlikely of places. But everything comes at a price…

In ENTICED, Violet’s story continues as she again embarks on the call of her destiny and must make choices and sacrifices that leave her questioning everything and everyone, most of all – herself. Old enemies become new allies and old friend become formidable foes with terrifying abilities.

It is in the mountains of Jordan that Violet and her friends must travel in order to hunt for the lost Grigori Scripture before it falls into the wrong hands. Just when things appear to be going well and Violet and Lincoln finally admit their feelings for one another – battle breaks out and the truth is most unforgivingly revealed. Everything they thought they knew will be turned on its head.

Enticed by Jessica ShirvingtonI bet you did a happy dance when you got your contract for Embraced! What was this like (no, NOT the dance, getting the contract!)?

The publishing contract was great. It takes a lot of emotion and a long time to write (and rewrite and rewrite) a manuscript. There was more than one occasion where I wondered if I was just kidding myself – not dissimilar to when I sing along to music in the car thinking I’m doing a pretty damn good job … until I turn down the radio and actually hear myself! So yeah, getting an agent and then publisher was off the charts exciting. The dance was, er … special …

What has it been like for you living in Violet’s world?

Full on. I feel a bit bipolar at the moment – forever bouncing between two worlds and two minds. Violet is so real to me, and her story really affects me. I actually have to stop and do a reality check every now and then!

I loved the blend you achieve between writing a coming of age YA and a fairly suspenseful good/evil battle, with a new twist on the angel mythology. How did you come to create this world?

It just grew on its own really. Building blocks. First Violet and research into her name, then the rainbow, then angels, then more research, then conflict, then more research, research, research. End result – Violet’s world.

What’s your favourite part about being an author? Have you always wanted to write or did this desire come to you more recently?

The desire to write is relatively recent. A bit of a life changer actually. Favourite part – simple, everything! From the concept, the research, the writing, the rewriting, the breakdowns, the editing, and holding the finished product.  No negatives, I love it all.

How do you manage to balance your writing and your personal time? When not engrossed in your latest project, what are the fun things that you like to do?

Poorly, if I’m honest. I tend to lose track of time easily. I have a fairly obsessive nature so when I start writing I find it hard to stop for anything. I’m the same when I am reading. Time slips away all too easily. I’m very lucky that I have two little girls that have no qualms about climbing all over me until I give up and turn off the computer. I don’t know where I’d be without them! Fun things are all about family. Free time is time with my husband and kids – from seeing a movie, going to the park, having milkshakes and babycinos – the normal boring stuff is the absolute best.

So what can we expect next?

Next EMBLAZE (Book3) will be released in October this year. I have just finished the manuscript and am embarking on the editing process now.  At the same time I will be working on book 4, which will be released early 2012. I have another idea I am quietly tinkering with but for now, The Violet Eden Chapters remains my focus.
